This page walks through installing the LegalCloud WordPress plugin. It works with WordPress 5.0+ and PHP 7.4+.
Before you start
You need:
- A WordPress site with administrator access.
- A LegalCloud account (create one at https://dash.legalcloud.info/auth/onboarding).
- At least one site and one published document in LegalCloud (see Quickstart).
Step 1 — Download the plugin
- Sign in to your dashboard at https://dash.legalcloud.info/auth/login.
- Open Downloads.
- Download LegalCloud Documents for WordPress. The file is named
legalcloud-wordpress-{version}.zip.
The page shows the SHA-256 fingerprint of the file. To verify it:
sha256sum legalcloud-wordpress-{version}.zip
Step 2 — Install the plugin
In your WordPress admin:
- Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Choose the ZIP and click Install Now.
- Click Activate Plugin.
Alternatively, install it through FTP/SFTP: unzip the file, upload the legalcloud folder to /wp-content/plugins/ and activate it in Plugins → Installed Plugins. With WP-CLI:
wp plugin install legalcloud-wordpress-{version}.zip --activate
Step 3 — Run the setup wizard
After activation, go to Settings → LegalCloud. The wizard has three steps:
- API token — in the LegalCloud dashboard go to Organization → API, generate a token (see API tokens), copy it and paste it in the wizard. The plugin validates it.
- Site — choose the LegalCloud site that matches this WordPress website.
- Documents — the wizard lists the documents of that site; pick the ones you will use.
If the validation fails, common causes are:
- The token was copied with trailing spaces.
- The token was revoked or has expired.
- Your server cannot reach
https://api.legalcloud.info(check the firewall). - Your site has TLS certificate verification disabled.
Step 4 — Insert a document
Use any of these:
- The shortcode:
[legalcloud_doc hash="abc123def456"](see shortcode reference). Thehashis the part after/d/of the public address of the document. - The LegalCloud Document block in the block editor.
- The LegalCloud Documents box in the sidebar of the page editor: pick a document and click to insert it.
If you see an error instead of the document, enable the WordPress debug log (WP_DEBUG_LOG) and check /wp-content/debug.log.
Updating the plugin
WordPress shows the standard update notice in Plugins when a new version is available. You can also download the new ZIP from Downloads and upload it again from Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin; WordPress offers to replace the installed version.
Uninstalling
- Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins.
- Click Deactivate and then Delete under "LegalCloud Documents".
The plugin removes its own settings. Your documents stay in LegalCloud, so you can use them from another site.
Troubleshooting
"Could not connect to API"
- Check that your server can reach
https://api.legalcloud.info. - Check that the token is valid; regenerate it in the dashboard if needed.
- Check that your site has a valid TLS certificate.
Document not found, or a notice instead of the document
- Check the
hashof the shortcode. - Check that the document is published and visible.
- Check that the document is assigned to the LegalCloud site selected in the plugin, and that the visitor's country is allowed. In those cases the plugin shows a plain-text notice.
The shortcode appears as plain text
- Put it in a "Shortcode" block, or use the LegalCloud Document block.
- Check that the plugin is activated.
